James A. Underwood, Jr., M.D.

James A. Underwood, Jr., a Jackson, MS native, joined GI Associates in 2001 and is a gastroenterologist at the Flowood GI Associates and Endoscopy Center and Madison GI Associates and Endoscopy Center.

 He graduated magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of the Arts in Biological Sciences from the University of Mississippi. He also completed his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Mississippi where he also graduated magna cum laude. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He returned to the University of Mississippi as Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor in Internal Medicine, and then went on to complete his fellowship in Gastroenterology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He is board certified in Gastroenterology.



In addition to working at GI Associates, Dr. Underwood is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Mississippi. He has numerous memberships including diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and a member of the Mississippi State Medical Association and the American Gastroenterological Association.
