So by now you may have heard that March is set aside as Colon Cancer Awareness Month; but if you are at least 50, being aware isn't enough - you need to schedule a screening colonoscopy.

Maybe one day the whole country will be festooned with blue ribbons, but for now we will continue educating the people of Central Mississippi on the facts surrounding colon cancer.

Do you know:

  • If you are at least 50, you should have a screening colonoscopy
  • If you are an African American you should talk to your doctor about your increased risk, it is possible you may need to be screened at 45
  • An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure - During a colonoscopy, doctors look for and remove polyps. Removal of precancerous polyps prevents the formation of a malignancy.
  • Being overweight is a risk factor for a number of cancers, including colorectal cancers. Eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise reduces your risk.
